    Attitudes Towards Knowledge Management of School Administrators and Teachers Working in Turkish Schools

     The aim of this study is to investigate attitudes of school administrators and teachers working in Turkish schools towards knowledge management. In this research, an explanatory design incorporating quantitative and qualitative methods was used. The quantitative strand of the study was designed as a survey model, and the data was collected from 336 school administrators and teachers who work in the province of Sivas by using the Attitude Scale Towards Knowledge Management (Demir, 2005). The qualitative part of the study was carried out using a case study design, and the researchers used semi-structured interviews to collect data from 12 school administrators and teachers who work in the province of Sivas. To interpret the interview data, descriptive analysis, content analysis, and constant comparison techniques were used. The quantitative findings revealed that school administrators and teachers reported positive attitudes towards knowledge management with respect to self-development and negative attitudes towards communication and commitment. and negative attitudes towards communication and commitment. According to the qualitative findings obtained from questions asked to the participants with respect to communication, commitment, and self-development, participants stated that the knowledge management activities that took place at school were insufficient. Consequently, a knowledge management model suitable for Turkish school context is suggested.L’objectif de cette recherche est d’étudier les attitudes face à la gestion de connaissances qu’ont les administrateurs scolaires et les enseignants dans des écoles turques. Ce projet a employé une conception explicative qui intègre des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives. La composante quantitative de l’étude a été conçue comme enquête reposant sur l’échelle mesurant l’attitude envers la gestion des connaissances (Demir, 2005) et administrée auprès de 336 administrateurs scolaires et enseignants de la province de Sivas. La composante qualitative de l’étude était basée sur un modèle d’étude de cas dans laquelle les chercheurs ont employé des entrevues semi-structurées pour recueillir des données auprès de 12 administrateurs scolaires et enseignants de la province de Sivas. Des analyses descriptives, des analyses du contenu et des techniques de comparaison constante ont servi dans l’interprétation des données d’entrevue. Les résultats quantitatifs ont révélé que les administrateurs scolaires et les enseignants avaient des attitudes positives face à la gestion des connaissances relativement au développement personnel et des attitudes négatives par rapport à la communication et l’engagement. Les résultats qualitatifs provenant des questions portant sur la communication, l’engagement et le développement personnel indiquent que les participants trouvaient que les activités de gestion des connaissances à l’école étaient insuffisantes. Nous proposons donc un modèle de gestion des connaissances qui convient mieux au contexte des écoles turques.

    A high performance hardware architecture for one bit transform based motion estimation

    Motion Estimation (ME) is the most computationally intensive part of video compression and video enhancement systems. One bit transform (IBT) based ME algorithms have low computational complexity. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a high performance systolic hardware architecture for IBT based ME. The proposed hardware performs full search ME for 4 Macroblocks in parallel and it is the fastest IBT based ME hardware reported in the literature. In addition, it uses less on-chip memory than the previous IBT based ME hardware by using a novel data reuse scheme and memory organization. The proposed hardware is implemented in Verilog HDL. It consumes %34 of the slices in a Xilinx XC2VP30-7 FPGA. It works at 115 MHz in the same FPGA and is capable of processing 50 1920x1080 full High Definition frames per second. Therefore, it can be used in consumer electronics products that require real-time video processing or compression

    An LED-Based Structured Illumination Microscope Using A Digital Micromirror Device And GPU Accelerated Image Reconstruction

    When combined with computational approaches, fluorescence imaging becomes one of the most powerful tools in biomedical research. It is possible to achieve resolution figures beyond the diffraction limit, and improve the performance and flexibility of high-resolution imaging systems with techniques such as structured illumination microscopy (SIM) reconstruction. In this study, the hardware and software implementation of an LED-based superresolution imaging system using SIM employing GPU accelerated parallel image reconstruction is presented. The sample is illuminated with two-dimensional sinusoidal patterns with various orientations and lateral phase shifts generated using a digital micromirror device (DMD). SIM reconstruction is carried out in frequency space using parallel CUDA kernel functions. Furthermore, a general purpose toolbox for the parallel image reconstruction algorithm and an infrastructure that allows all users to perform parallel operations on images without developing any CUDA kernel code is presented. The developed image reconstruction algorithm was run separately on a CPU and a GPU. Two different SIM reconstruction algorithms have been developed for the CPU as mono-thread CPU algorithm and multi-thread OpenMP CPU algorithm. SIM reconstruction of 1024 × 1024 px images was achieved in 1.49 s using GPU computation, indicating an enhancement by *28 and *20 in computation time when compared with mono-thread CPU computation and multi-thread OpenMP CPU computation, respectively

    Fabrication and Characterization of Large Numerical Aperture, High-Resolution Optical Fiber Bundles Based on High-Contrast Pairs of Soft Glasses for Fluorescence Imaging

    Fabrication and characterization of flexible optical fiber bundles (FBs) with inhouse synthesized high-index and low-index thermally matched glasses are presented. The FBs composed of around 15000 single-core fibers with pixel sizes between 1.1 and 10 μm are fabricated using the stack-and-draw technique from sets of thermally matched zirconiumsilicate ZR3, borosilicate SK222, sodium-silicate K209, and F2 glasses. With high refractive index contrast pair of glasses ZR3/SK222 and K209/F2, FBs with numerical apertures (NAs) of 0.53 and 0.59 are obtained, respectively. Among the studied glass materials, ZR3, SK222, and K209 are in-house synthesized, while F2 is commercially acquired. Seven different FBs with varying pixel sizes and bundle diameters are characterized. Brightfield imaging of a micro-ruler and a Convallaria majalis sample and fluorescence imaging of a dye-stained paper tissue and a cirrhotic mice liver tissue are demonstrated using these FBs, demonstrating their good potential for microendoscopic imaging. Brightfield and fluorescence imaging performance of the studied FBs are compared. For both sets of glass compositions, good imaging performance is observed for FBs, with core diameter and core-to-core distance values larger than 1.6 μm and 2.3 μm, respectively. FBs fabricated with K209/F2 glass pairs revealed better performance in fluorescence imaging due to their higher NA of 0.59

    Frequency Containment Control of Hydropower Plants Using Different Adaptive Methods

    With the growth in the share of variable renewable energy sources, fluctuations in the power generation caused by these types of power plants can diminish the stability and flexibility of the grid. These two can be enhanced by applying frequency containment using hydropower plants as an operational reserve. The frequency containment in hydropower plants is automatically controlled by speed governors within seconds. Disturbances such as fluctuations in the net head and aging may diminish the performance of the controllers of the speed governors. In this study, model reference adaptive control approaches based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rule and Lyapunov method were exploited in order to improve the performance of the speed governor for frequency containment control. The active power control with frequency control was enhanced by the aforementioned adaptive control methods. A mathematical model of a hydropower plant with a surge tank and medium penstock was constructed and validated through site measurements of a plant. It was shown that, as they are applicable in real life, both methods perform significantly better compared to conventional proportional-integrator control. Even in first five deviations, the performance of the conventional controller improved by 58.8% using the MIT rule and by 65.9% using the Lyapunov method. When the two adaptive control approaches were compared with each other, the MIT rule outputted better results than the Lyapunov method when the disturbance frequency was higher; however, the latter was more functional for rare disturbances

    Modelling of evaporation from the reservoir of Yuvacik dam using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems

    Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models are proposed as an alternative approach of evaporation estimation for Yuvacik Dam. This study has three objectives: (1) to develop ANFIS models to estimate daily pan evaporation from measured meteorological data; (2) to compare the ANFIS model to the multiple linear regression (MLR) model; and (3) to evaluate the potential of ANFIS model. Various combinations of daily meteorological data, namely air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed, are used as inputs to the ANFIS so as to evaluate the degree of effect of each of these variables on daily pan evaporation. The results of the ANFIS model are compared with MLR model. Mean square error, average absolute relative error and coefficient of determination statistics are used as comparison criteria for the evaluation of the model performances. The ANFIS technique whose inputs are solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, gives mean square errors of 0.181 mm, average absolute relative errors of 9.590% mm, and determination coefficient of 0.958 for Yuvacik Dam station, respectively. Based on the comparisons, it was found that the ANFIS technique could be employed successfully in modelling evaporation process from the available climatic data. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
